At approximately 0930 hours, Garner EMS81 and EMS83 were dispatched to the Downtown Sheraton located at 421 S. Salisbury Street in Raleigh in response to an EMS Alarm 3. The initial dispatched was for a patient with respiratory distress. The first arriving crews learned of approximately 150 juveniles complaining of stomach and intestinal problems. With this information, the 3rd Alarm Medical Response was requested and generated and additional 12 paramedic ambulances, 3 District Chief's, and additional Advance Paramedic Paramedic, EMS Truck 1 and the Medical Director.
The Raleigh Fire Department quickly concluded that this was not a HazMat incident and command was transferred to EMS. EMS Command determined that it was appropriate to treat in place. By mid afternoon, the last of the people were seen. Approximately 150 medical evaluations had been performed. 30 people were treated and 5 were transported.
